AP Biology can be a challenging but exciting course.  Previewing material over the summer can give you the edge you need to enter the course confidently!  In a small group, interactive setting, we will delve into the four "Big Ideas" identified by the College Board.  This one week course will provide you with an overview and a reference frame for what is coming in your AP Bio course.  Students will be expected to complete 1-2 hours of homework and study each evening.  In addition to this course, we will offer small group tutorials throughout the Fall and an AP Prep Camp during the February 2019 break.

Course fee does not include course text. We will provide textbook rental or purchase options.

The 4 Big Ideas

  1. Evolution: The process of evolution dries the diversity and unity of life.
    1. The process of natural selection
    2. Contributions of phenotypic variation and genetic drift
    3. Multi-disciplinary understanding of evolution
    4. Phylogenetic trees and cladograms
    5. Evidence for speciation and extinction
    6. Hypotheses for the origin of living systems
  2. Energy: Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce, and to maintain dynamic homeostasis.
    1. Laws of thermodynamics, entropy and enthalpy
    2. Cellular respiration
    3. Photosynthesis
    4. Selective permeability, passive and active transport
    5. Biotic and abiotic factors
    6. Dynamic homeostasis
    7. Non-specific immune responses
    8. Physiological changes due to environmental stimuli and molecular signals
  3. Information: Living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information essential to life processes.
    1. Production and function of nucleic acids: DNA and RNA
    2. Difference between mitosis and meiosis
    3. How genetic variation occurs
    4. Signal transduction and gene expression
    5. Endocrine system and hormones
    6. Nervous system responses
  4. Interactions: Biological systems interact; these systems and their interactions possess complex properties.
    1. Differences in chemical bonds that affect characteristics of molecules
    2. Carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins
    3. Specialized functions of subcellular components
    4. How species coexist with their resources
    5. How species diversity affects the ecosystem

Meet Your Instructor!

Picture
Felicia is a scientist and an educator, passionate about helping students achieve their highest potentials. I do not just help students with content knowledge, but also show them ways to learn and help them aspire to higher goals. Many of my students bond with me as friends.

While I was working actively in research projects with NASA and at MIT, I started helping students find their interests and good matches with colleges. I am also on the Education Council at MIT, being involved with applicants' intake interviews. I can teach all math subjects and all science subjects, as I was trained in both the biological sciences and the physical sciences.

I have over 15 years of tutoring experience, both here in the US and overseas. Being trained as a scientist and an engineering, and having studied and worked at MIT, I have much insight into the learning of mathematics and the joy of mathematics. I am also an exceptional tutor in all the sciences, since I was not only a research scientist, I was also the creative director of many K-12 interactive programs produced on educational channels, and in collaboration with NASA's Education and Outreach Division.
